MSI X-Slim Series X340 and X600 notebooks

X-Slim is the new product lineup this year from MSI. The product series aims for “Light, Slim, Aesthetic” product designs to challenge the senses of consumers and extremes of notebooks. After the X320 was introduced to the world, it has become a hot topic among consumers. Sam Chern, MSI’s marketing director, mentioned that “Light, Slim, Aesthetic” is going higher up the list of consumers’ notebook purchase decisions. As a result, MSI is leading the pack with X320 and will be further expanding upon the X-Slim series with more innovative ultra portable notebooks.

X340 ultra portable notebook, making its first showing at CeBIT, shares the same specifications as X320, including the golden ratio 16:9 cinematic 13” LED display, weight of just 1.3kg, thickest point at 1.98cm thin and just 6mm at its thinnest. This notebook is even thinner than a small pack of tissue paper!

However, in direct contrast with X320, which was designed for consumers with long life mobile computing needs, the X340 is designed for users with multimedia requirements. Therefore, while X320 features the Intel Menlow platform, X340 uses the Intel Centrino mobile platform with ULV CPU architecture, which provides the user with performance, multimedia features, as well as power saving advantages. Even more amazing is that the total power consumption is merely one sixth of other notebook computers!

Not only that, X340 also comes with the complete multimedia feature set, including full I/O ports, HDMI port, as well as Blu-Ray support! For network connectivity, X340 features 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection, Bluetooth connection, and even optional WiMAX modules!

X340 is offered in three different colors for the preference of different consumers, which are: Splendid Champagne Gold, Elegant Pearl White and Stylish Techno Black. The stylish exterior and elegant design makes it a fashion statement for trendy consumers.

MSI also introduced the ultra portable concept and design to the larger notebook models. The newest X600 is equipped with a 16:9 widescreen 15” display but weighs only 2kg – rewriting the history of large display notebooks! Sam Chern, MSI’s marketing director, mentioned that X600 with Intel Centrino mobile platform and ULV CPU would focus on the 16” notebook market and achieve new heights in sales!

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800

Intel's V8: firing on all cylinders?

Intel struts its stuff with a new quad-core CPU you might buy and an eight-core set-up that is sure to be out of reach...
Rating

Suggested Price: £810/$1199
More info:
Intel's Core 2 Extreme page

Let's start with V8 as it's something of an odd ball. It consists of an Intel S5000XVN ATX motherboard and two quad-core Xeon X5365 processors, each clocked to 3GHz and capable of operating on a 1333MHz frontside bus. With it, Intel sent us a pair of CPU coolers, 4GB of Samsung FB-DIMM PC2-5300F memory and an 850W power supply from Cooler Master.
So, that's eight physical cores on two sockets all with an estimated value of £2400. Good value as a bundle? It's hard to be sure, as Intel isn't selling the V8 as a system but is instead touting it as a technology showcase.
Or is it? As it happens the Xeon X5365 processor isn't currently available through the usual channels. If you want one, you have to buy a Mac Pro from Apple. The covering letter that came with the V8 refers to an "eight-core media creation PC", which is a pretty good description of the top-of-the-range Mac Pro.
Could V8, or a version of it, be a board supplied by Intel for Apple and now getting a lease of life beyond the Mac platform? Neither Intel nor Apple are saying, of course.

Intel said: There is no mandatory packaging sales Atom chipset

Xbitlabs Web site reported, although NVIDIA recently released “Ion Platform” (Ion platform) in the specifications and performance are very attractive, but so far have not been friendly to support the board manufacturers, NVIDIA that the main reason for Intel to Atom processors and chipsets with the sale of the policies that hinder its own into the ultra-portable market.
Intel has been denied, “We packaged sales Atom processor and chipset, but it may also be sold separately Atom processor.” Intel spokesman explained this site Xbitlabs questions. According to Intel’s official information, in fact, NVIDIA does not require a separate authorization in order to create sales and Intel Atom processor-compatible chipset products.
NVIDIA last week released for the Atom processor chipset MCP79 single-chip design, set Northbridge MCH, Nanqiao ICH, a graphics core mGPU in which graphics core GeForce 9400M G, to support DX10, CUDA, PureVideo HD technology, 3D games, high-definition video decoder, such as the natural performance is far superior to Intel 945GSE chipset integrated GMA950. However regrettable that in terms of performance, more powerful at the same time, MCP79 power is also slightly higher, reaching 14W, while the 945GSE + ICH7-M chips add up to only 2 5.5W.
And Intel also pointed out that the Internet is the primary purpose for the Internet, send and receive e-mail and so on, rather than the game of these resources require a higher procedures. In addition the cost of Internet access is also favored by the market one of the main reasons, NVIDIA ion platform using higher prices as a result of the DDR3 memory and a higher-capacity battery needs, so for Acer’s Aspire One and ASUS Eee PC such as the Internet this is not the best option.
Although Intel demonstrated a high-profile, but has been moved as high as 87.4 percent market share of Intel, any outsider would naturally be regarded as potential adversaries, NVIDIA high-profile platform to promote the work of the ion needs to be carefully carried out.

Intel cans IDF Taiwan 2009

According to a report from Digitimes, chip giant Intel is canceling IDF Taiwan 2009. The Intel Developer Forum is a technology convention focused on Intel products and is a chance for Intel to unveil new products and roadmaps to the press, analysts, and industry insiders.
There were three IDF events in 2008 so having one less isn’t a major loss, though it is a sign of the tough economic times that every company, including Intel, is facing right now. The flagship event–IDF 2009 San Francisco–is still planned for September 22-24, 2009 at the Moscone Center as is the April event at Beijing International Convention Center. The lack of a Taipei event, which would have run from November 16-17, means Intel will skip this important manufacturing and technology area, but it was close enough to the San Francisco IDF that is was clearly the one to be dropped. Intel’s presence at Computex 2009 should help offset the loss of this particular Forum though.

OQO reversal on Intel Atom UMPC? New Atom product hinted

OQO, makers of high-end UMPCs, may have lost their CEO but they could be gaining a new Intel Atom based version of their touchscreen device. CEO Dennis Moore left the company this week, with company co-founder Andy Popell taking over the reigns; that seems to have loosened spokesperson Bob Rosin’s tongue. He appears to be suggesting that the prototype OQO Model 02 running an Intel Atom CPU spotted at the IDF conference back in August will, in fact, become a production product.

After speculation started over the prototype 02, Dennis Moore had quickly stepped in to describe it as a “technology showcase” and not something that would reach production lines. His explanation was that it was a demonstration of two mobile-focused companies working together to target professionals.

“OQO is very excited about their upcoming roadmap. Rosin mentioned the Intel IDF conference where they demoed a prototype Model 02 running an Intel Atom 1.6 ghz processor, but wouldn’t elaborate much more on pricing, timelines, etc. Don’t expect a product release this fall, though” GottaBeMobile

At the time, we speculated that OQO was nipping rumors in the bud to preserve sales of the existing models, which could dive if would-be customers believed a new, Atom-powered version was just around the corner. We also suggested that OQO could be waiting until the dual-core Atom 330 CPU was available. Rosin’s apparent confirmation that an Intel-based OQO is a work-in-progress would seemingly back both of those theories up.

Intel has taken the wraps off a family of tiny processors for handheld devices, called Atom -- also destined for low cost notebooks and desktop PCs which may run Linux.

Get ready for a new brand in the already cluttered world of tech marketing. Intel has chosen Atom as the name for its super small low-power processor formerly known as Silverthorne, due to be launched during next month's IDF in Shanghai.

Silverthorne - sorry, we mean Atom - is the child of a ground-up effort to create a new processor for the ultra-mobile market, ranging from UMPCs to mobile Internet devices. There's even the chance it could pop up in a future generation of the iPhone.

Small wonder: Intel's own concept mobile Internet device typifies the products that will run on its Atom 'Silverthorne' processorHowever, Intel also sees Atom as becoming the powerplant of "a new class of simple and affordable Internet-centric computers" including notebooks and desktops, which Intel has respectively dubbed ‘netbooks' and ‘net-tops'. These devices will run a beefed-up variant of Silverthorne formerly codenamed Diamondville. (The name change will no doubt please the guys running the Neil Diamond tribute Web site of the same name).

Intel Corporation today unveiled five new products in the Dual-Core Intel Itanium 2 Processor 9000 series. Previously codenamed “Montecito,” the new processors are designed for the most sophisticated high-end computing platforms in the world.

They double the performance and lower energy requirements, improving performance per watt by 2.5 times compared to existing, single-core versions. All server-maker members of the Itanium Solutions Alliance (ISA) will launch new Dual-Core Intel Itanium 2 Processor 9000 series-based products.

The flagship 9050 model features two complete processing cores and nearly triples the cache or memory reservoir versus Intel’s previous generation. It also can execute four instructions or threads per processor enhanced by Intel’s Hyper-Threading Technology (HT Technology).

The new Dual-Core Itanium 2 processors represent the world’s most intricate product design to date with more than 1.7 billion transistors. This allows Intel designers to deliver new features to the Itanium processor family that create robust virtualization capabilities, enhanced cache reliability and other mainframe-like capabilities.

Unlike products from the remaining RISC vendors, the Dual-Core Intel Itanium 2 Processor 9000 series offers end-user freedom through a broad choice of software with more than 8,000 applications in production. Itanium processor-based servers and high-performance computing (HPC) systems are unique in the industry. They provide mission critical support for Windows, Linux, UNIX and other operating systems as well as new migration tools off of proprietary servers and mainframes - delivering unbeatable flexibility and a confident adoption path for IT managers to migrate to a standards-based architecture.

The Dual-Core Intel Itanium 2 processor 9000 series delivers performance at a system scale unmatched by competing RISC architectures. It set world record results in several key server benchmarks including a score of 4230 SPEC_int_rate_base_20001, nearly triple the previous record.

“Intel remains focused on removing the proprietary shackles that remain in the high-end of the server market segment, and with Dual-Core Itanium 2 processors we are delivering unprecedented IT freedom with a product that excels in performance, reliability and improved energy efficiency,” said Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager, Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group. “The broad system and software support for Itanium 2 processors enables CIOs to move away from aging and expensive legacy systems and instead direct those funds toward standard-based computing and business innovation.

“In virtually all areas, momentum for Itanium-based systems is growing. More applications were added during the first half this year than were available in 2003 and more than 70 percent of the top Global 100 companies are choosing Itanium technology. In addition, the Itanium Solutions Alliance has committed $10 billion of hardware support through 2010 to the architecture.”

Dual-core Itanium 2-based systems target the most compute intensive areas, such as business analytics, large data warehouses and HPC areas. This is increasingly important as companies continue to strive for real-time decision making based on increasingly large amounts of data; and scientists, engineers and researchers seek to solve medical, climatic and other challenges through the use of computing power. The Itanium 2 processor’s Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) architecture design provides high levels of parallelism and computational capabilities, driving greater efficiency into analytics applications and business intelligence software.

“Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on the new dual-core, multi-threaded Itanium 2 processor will provide exceptional performance, scalability and reliability to enterprise customers with database workloads and line of business applications,” said Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft. “Microsoft is resolute in its support of the Itanium architecture, today and in the future.”

Intel G45 Chipset

The Intel G45 Chipset is Intel's top of the line as of Summer 2008, and is the integrated graphics version of the X45 chipset. Supporting the same high-end Dual and Quad core processors as the X45 the G45's integrated graphic solutions is marketed towards Home Theater PC builders. Intel claims the integrated video decoder puts less strain on the CPU and lets even lower powered processors handle 1080p Blu-Ray discs. As of August 19th these decoding capabilities are not functional and most of the processing is still done on the CPU side. Intel claims they are working on the problem.
