Intel power PC platforms: Core 2 Extreme QX6800 and V8

To try it out, we plugged in a Western Digital WD150 Raptor hard drive and an Asus GeForce 7950 GT graphics card and then tried to install the 64-bit version of Windows XP 64-bit - 32-bit XP isn't supported by this hardware. Two things manifested themselves. First, there's a delay of 30 seconds or more between power-on and POST. It takes so long to get to this stage that we started to wonder if the kit was broken. Secondly, the 64-bit XP installer wouldn't recognise any SATA hard drive that we had to hand, so we plumped instead for installing the 32-bit Windows Vista Ultimate and all was well.

Intel's V8: eight cores in action

We ran a series of tests on the V8 which consisted of PCMark05, encoding a 350MB AVI file to DVD with Nero 7, and finishing up with POV-Ray. Glance at the results and you'll see that V8 is fast in PCMark05 and Nero but not much faster than the QX6800. You'll find the charts on the next few pages. POV-Ray is a different story as it is properly threaded to use multi-core processors, and in this test V8 delivers huge performance but, let's face it, that's not much use unless you are rendering the next Pixar movie at home.

Intel's V8: scoring well in PCMark05

You'll also note that the power draw of V8 is huge, to the extent that the motherboard requires a power supply with the usual 24-pin connector, as well as both 8-pin and 4-pin plugs. You also need a case fan solely to keep the FB-DIMM memory cool.

In other words, this hardware is ideally suited for a workstation rather than a PC, so what on Earth is Intel playing at by sending this hardware to Register Hardware?

The likeliest explanation is that Intel wants to show the CPU part of its 'Skulltrail' platform to the world. This is the platform that will combine dual quad-core CPUs with four PCI Express x16 slots to deliver a humungous gaming system, although you have to wonder about the graphics side of things. Will Skulltrail support CrossFire, and will SLI support Skulltrail? If not you certainly won't need four long PCIe slots and may not even require two.

New Intel Server Processors: Fewer Watts, High Performance

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 25, 2008 – Intel Corporation has further increased its energy-efficient performance lead today with the introduction of two low-voltage 45 nanometer (nm) processors for servers and workstations that run at 50 watts, or just 12.5 watts per core and frequencies as high as 2.50 GigaHertz (GHz). The Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor L5400 Series takes advantage of Intel's unique 45nm manufacturing capabilities and reinvented transistor formula that combine to boost performance and reduce power consumption in data centers.

Benefiting companies with power-constrained, high-compute density environments, the Quad-Core Intel Xeon L5400 processors are as much as 25 percent faster1 and have a 50 percent larger cache size than Intel's previous-generation, low-voltage Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, while at the same time maintaining the low 50-watt thermal envelope. The quad-core L5420 and L5410 processors run at 2.50 GHz and 2.33 GHz, respectively, and feature a unique 12 megabytes (MB) of on-die cache and dedicated 1333 MHz front side buses (FSB).

"Using Intel's hafnium-infused high-k metal gate transistors has allowed our quad-core 45nm low-voltage server chips to attain new heights in power-efficient performance," said Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of Intel's Server Platforms Group. "These chips deliver the speed needed while using meager amounts of energy."

A number of systems vendors are supporting the L5400 series and L5210, including Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, Fujitsu-Siemens, Gigabyte, HP, Hitachi, IBM, Microstar, NEC, Quanta, Rackable, Sun, Supermicro, Tyan and Verari. Next quarter, Intel will also begin shipping a new dual-core low-voltage processor that will boast a 40-watt rating and clock speed of 3 GHz, with a 6 MB cache size and a 1333 MHz FSB. Intel is also extending the existing Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor 5400 series for embedded market segments by offering the Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor L5410 with support for a 7-year life cycle.

Since unveiling the industry's first 45nm processors last November, Intel today is shipping more than 35 different server, desktop and notebook processors with Intel's Hafnium-based high-k metal gate formula and 45nm technology.

Intel Pentium 4 Ht Computer Case

Description :

This is a custom built computer, it is in mint condition and has only been built for acouple of days with the latest XP PRO operating systems on it. It comes in a raidmax samurai computer case. The case has a window to look through, a door that shuts in the front to hide the CD drives and floppy drives. It has five drive bays in the front and two floppy drives. It comes with a CD-RW/DVD combo and a floppy.Inside the case I have replaced all the fans with fans that glow light blue except for the power supply fans. There are two cold cathode tubes that put out a bright blue color. If you look in the pictures where you can see in the window, the tower where you put your drives doesnt need a single screw to hold them in place. There are black pins that are very easily adjustable to open and close, which makes it very easy to add or change drives. There is a 160 gig hard drive,1 gig of 400 MHz of RAM for gaming, video card, all of the IDE cables are the braided kind for improved air flow. There is a 2.4 ghz processor with heatsink and fan. The motherboard is very good quality, it has five PCI slots and three have already been used. The computer comes with a 450 watt power supply that has six CD drive power outlets and two floppy outlets.I have put 2.4 ghz wireless internet in it(have to have a router for it to work) but if a router is unavailable the motherboard has integrated ethernet in it so you can just plug it up the old fashioned way. If you do have a router, just set the channels to match the router and you have internet. I also have a t. V. Capture card that allows you to watch 125 channel t. V. With a t. V. Guide programmed into it. You can also record t. V. Shows and/or movies to your hard drive. The computer already has the latest norton antivirus downloaded on it, and works great. The wireless keyboard and mouse are very nice, only the best. The keyboard is covered in hotkeys and both the mouse and the keyboard have a scroll button that can scroll up and down, and left and right for web pages that are to wide you dont have to click the tab just move the mouse scroller left or right. I have a 17 inch dell flat screen LCD monitor that has four USB ports on it, two on the side and two on the bottom. I am also selling a surround sound speaker system that comes with five speakers and a 2000 watt subwoofer, wow..... It really has a kick to it.
